Join us on Thursday, October 29 from 12-1 pm at La Kretz Garden Pavilion for another installment of Botany Brown Bag. Dr. Rachel Shahan will give a talk titled “Getting to the Root of Plant Development.” Plants have an amazing ability to produce new organs throughout their lifetimes, including flowers above the ground and roots below. Dr. Rachel Shahan will discuss how she studies post-embryonic development by applying single-cell genomics and time-lapse microscopy approaches to a simple plant model, the root of Arabidopsis thaliana. Make sure to bring your lunch! This event is free and open to the public, no RSVP required.

Botany Brown Bag: The Collection Project

Time Thu 11/12 • 12PM - 1PM PST RSVP

La Kretz Garden Pavilion, 707 Tiverton Drive

Join the Garden on Thursday, November 12 from 12-1 pm at La Kretz Garden Pavilion for another installment of Botany Brown Bag. Dr. Josh Brindley will give a talk titled “The Collection Project.” Botanical gardens serve as living museums, preserving and interpreting plant diversity through carefully curated living collections. Unlike conventional museum specimens, plants grow, reproduce, and die, presenting unique challenges for collection management, documentation, and long-term curation. In this talk, Dr. Josh Brindley will explore The Collections Project, an IMLS-funded initiative to analyze and assess the plant inventory of the Mathias Botanical Garden. He will discuss the inventory process, the development of a digital database, and how living collection data can inform curatorial decision-making, guide collection management, and shape future planning. Make sure to bring your lunch! This event is free and open to the public, no RSVP required.
